Auction House

The Auction House will give you a chance to buy and sell any card in the game that is tradable. This includes players, coaches, contracts, collectibles, and for some reason people spend coins on customization.

You can buy, sell, or trade on this market.

I'm going to explain how the market works, and then later on get to some strategies and how to use the market to your advantage.

Before I go any further, I want to make a warning for new players to HUT since this can be done in the market. Be warned, you may get messaged by a player on your console about making a trade with them. NEVER TRUST ANYONE WHO REACHES OUT TO YOU TO MAKE A DEAL FOR PLAYERS AND COINS ON THE SIDE. THIS IS A SCAM. I've had a few people try to say since you cannot trade a player for coin that I would have to give them coins for a contract pack, then they would send the players back for that same contract. I did not fall for this and want to make it known that people do try anything to get a player from you.

What is the Auction House?

This is where the community of fellow NHL gamers like yourself go to buy, sell or trade their cards. It works just like a stock market. Every card has a value on the market, and those go up and down on all sorts of factors.

A rule of thumb would be the longer a card is out there the lower the value it gets over time.

There are plenty of ways to take advantage of this greatly. In fact, to build yourself the best team, you should be spending your coins on cards from the market and NOT on packs.

You can put a player up for auction as well, though there is a 5% tax on a player. This is meant to control reselling cards. So if you sell a card for 1000, you will only get 950 coins for it. Keep that in mind when putting a price on a player but more about that shortly.

You can also trade for a player. When you see a player on the market, you can offer them up to 4 player cards for that one card. If you have a card and you would like to trade him, since there is no way to just offer as a trade, set their starting price to 9 million or so and buy it now to 10 million or so. That is univeral code for "I have a player I wish to trade" in NHL HUT. Use this method to search for players people want to trade only with as well. Go to your search and adjust the buy it now parameters. This is all I will say about trading as it is not an effective way to build a team nor do I have a strong strategy on how to make coins trading.Only advice I can give is if you want to make a trade, always check the market for what your player is going for, and only do the trade if the player(s) you're getting are worth more coin than the 1 you posted.

How do I find the value of a player?

I'm glad you asked. This is very simple. You need to use the filter to find the value of your player. You will need to do two searches.

First, find the lowest buy it now of a player at his position (fwd is fine, no need to get specific to LW RW or C, market is very close for all FWDs, just like D) at that specific overall rating. Change the rating filter to be that min, and then max out the max value. Just keep changing the buy it now filter to get a list of fewer results so you can get a rough idea for what someone else can pay for a player with the same overall.

Now, reset your filter. You're going to want to do a search and bring up that player's cards. I go league, change that to NHL, then put in the specific team, and even go as far as position. Find your player and see if his card is going for any more that what the value of the overall is going for. Is there's one out there, and no one's bidding on it because it seems insanely high, then chances are you might be able to get closer to what the overall range is. In other words, just be smart. If you see the same player, and he's got 5 cards and all are going for 200k while the overall is going for 75k, and people are even bidding on it for close to 200k, then you have a more desirable player who you can then sell for more. Those aren't too many, so don't get your hopes up. Usually, bigger guys guy for more. I have found Zdeno Chara and Patrick Laine cards tend to really go for a lot more than the overalls. And Chris Pronger's card, at 97, goes for 700K still yet 97 Potvin, another Gold Icon, goes for under 200K.

Generally, you're going to get what the overall value is getting at that time. But costs nothing to post so feel free to try to reach.

Also, at times of rewards for Rivals and Squad Battles (Wednesday and Friday afternoons just before 5) the market dives, and you can get some great values. Especially if you're trying to buy cheap base gold cards to build a set.

Another important tip - You can choose how long to leave the auction open, I never ever set it above 3 hours. Gamers will not want to tie up coin waiting for 3 days while their bid is put in. And if you have a favorable buy it now, it will sell much sooner. And, if you do not sell the card, you cannot play with it until the auction is finished. Most importantly, the shorter time cards show up first in searches. Use common sense, the sooner your card appears in a search the more likely it is to sell.

How do I make money off this market?

Now that we know what the market is, how can we make coin off it? There's a few methods you can attempt. This will take time. Also some involve specific timing to play on.

First and foremost, if you want to use your tradable players ONLY for coin and not use them for collectibles, then sell them here. DO NOT AUTOSELL THEM. You will always get more for them on the market. Even with the tax.

Secondly, cards range in value. Bronze cards are rare, cheap, and not usable unless you're doing a set in sets (more on that later), silvers go for under 400, base golds range from 750-1000 depending on time of the year and how into the current HUT event we are, and then cards go for anywhere just over a million for the best. And the best in Dec may be a 92 or 93 overall player, while in April it may be a 99 over, while the 92 goes for 20k. The best time to sell a top card is right way when his value will be the most.

Now, onto the methods.

1. The Wing and a Prayer Method
I started with the riskest, most likely to fail ways. Some players swear by it. I am NOT one of them but I like to offer options. Here at NHL HUT GUIDE we like to take in all perspectives and let you decide.
So to start, you want to save a lot of coin. Easily over 100k. The more coin you save the less risky this becomes. So you save up all this coin.
Next, go to the store. Buy packs. Many of them. The key is to get as many chances at getting a top card so you can sell it for 4 times the money you spent on all the packs combined. So you spend 150K on packs, and pull 50 cards or however many, the thought is you would get one player that would sell for 200K or more. Not a bad theory, but since packs NEVER yield these players often, very risky. I've kept count, opened 12 packs in a row and did not sniff a card above 85. I do not recommend but again, your choice.

2. The Big Fish Method
Unlike the previous method, this method involves no risk at all. Only time can be lost. So, not everyone is like us and HUT pros. Sometimes, people just don't know what they're doing. So, someone who doesn't research the market may just throw a player up there for less than what they're worth. Sometimes, a lot less. Like multiple 100k less. So, when this chance presents itself it can be very, very profitable. You want the BIG FISH!
But, this chance doesn't come around all that often so you have to pay attention. The better the deal, the shorter it will be around. Generally, if you are not around in the first 3 min of a deal like this someone else will buy them. Most of the time within a minute they're gone. Why? Because people do this method all day trying to fish.
So, take a good half hour to hour or longer, put on some tunes or TV on a separate device (I have some great Netflix recommendations if you want also), and do your Y Smash! (Triangle smash for PS4). First off, do not do this without at least 100k in your coins, even less unlikely you'll get a fish. But, do a search and filter it by buy it now, and put in the max is how many coins you have. Now, raise the overall filter to a high number and see what u get. What you're doing is getting a feel for what your 100k or so coins can get you. Let's say its 93. Now, go to the filter, change it to 95 to 99. Now search. And search again. And again. And again. You get the picture. Keep going until you hit one that comes up and buy it now. Then, go back in, and sell it for a profit. The aim is to get a card that's worth 700k but you spent 150k on it. Hence, why I suggest going up a few overall points for your search, so you make it worth your time.
Note you will have to buy pretty must instantly. Don't debate. Buy and collect later. But, this can take hours it happen even once. You can go days, weeks without ever even getting one. That's why I don't recommend this unless you have time to kill.
You can also do this with collectibles, but those happen less often.

So you're going to say, really? I keep hearing how people live off the market and that's how they do it? Well, to be frank, yes. I've seen plenty of you tube videos of people showing their success in this. They also preface it by saying it took a long time to get there. But don't fret, I have my own way I came up with to make you get coins fast, NOW! I'd make 40 to 50K coin a day doing this. And yes it involves being a little more active but pays off in the long run.

3. The Gold Card Fishing Method.
So, after trying out the Big Fish Method, and not every getting anything, I altered that plan to apply it to the Walmart theory. Repitition of sales makes you rich.
First, set your filter to search for gold card, and set it to buy it now of 700. If none, set to 750 and so on until you get results. This will tell you what gold cards are currently going for. Usually between 800-1000. You will want to keep hitting the button to search, as these cards go instantly.
QUICKTIP: If beginning of a new event, you'll find them higher, and drop a few days after the event has started. Gamers use them to build gold collectibles for the new MSP for the event so if you want to sell your gold cards then is the best time.
Now, if the price they are going for is 850, set your search to buy it now for 750. And keep searching. Buy any and all ones that show up for 750 and under. Then, resell at 850. That's it. Sure, you're only making less than 100 per sale, but these cards came out so often during the day you will be able to recycle them quickly and often. You will be getting cards at 750 a lot, but you will also be seeing cards at 650, 550, ect. This happens often. If you do this for an hour or two a day, you can easily make 10k barely trying.
QUICKTIP: Note, people when opening packs sell what they don't want in groups, so sometimes you can get someone selling 10 cards at a low price back to back to back.
QUICKTIP: Best time to do this is Friday as close to 5pm as possible. For the first hour, flood gates open with people opening Rivals rewards and flooding the market. I'd say just get them, hold them until Monday, and the sell gold cards galore on Monday.
QUICKTIP: Do not flood your own market. Putting 5 to 10 gold cards up at a time are fine, and if they sell keep putting up, but be careful you don't put 25 up (the max you can put up is 25 at a time) and then people are undercutting you. Leaving it at 10 or less will ensure your cards sell at the value you set.
